Yeast proteins, PROST analysis

PROST analysis of orphan Saccharomyces cerevisiae genes, searched against seven out-of-phylum species — E. gossypii, K. lactis, N. castellii, L. waltii, Y. lipolytica, A. nidulans, S. pombe — four of which (E. gossypii, K. lactis, N. castellii, L. waltii) have synteny information in the Yeast Gene Order Browser.

126 yeast genes are predicted to evolve fast [1] and so may not be detectable in out-of-phylum species. PROST found homologs for 92 of those 126, where a synteny-based BLAST search found homologs for only 11 (Table S2). For the 29 genes in Table S3 the lineage specificity is not explained by rate of evolution; there PROST finds homologs in 21 cases against BLAST's 12.
